János Arany

János Arany [ ˈjaːnoʃ ˈɒrɒɲ ] (born March 2, 1817 in Salonta (Hungarian Nagyszalonta ), Bihar County , Kingdom of Hungary ; † October 22, 1882 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian poet .
Life
Arany comes from the impoverished petty nobility. At first he worked as a teacher , actor and notary . But in 1846 he had a great success with his first novella . In the same year he finished his masterpiece Toldi , for which he received the Kisfaludy Prize. In Toldi the story of a popular hero is told, through which he promoted the emerging national consciousness of the Hungarians. During the Hungarian struggle for freedom of 1848/49 he wrote patriotic poems for this reason.
His passion turned into pessimism , and in 1877 he retired from various activities. All that remained for him was lyrical and epic work, which for him was a link between folk poetry without writing and the more abstract art literature. Arany completed the Toldi trilogy with Toldi's Evening (1854) and Toldi's Love (1879).
In Geszt there is now a small János Arany museum in his former home.
His son László Arany was also a poet.
