Miklós Barabás , also Nikolaus von Barabás (born February 10, 1810 in Márkusfalva, today Mărcușa , Romania ; † February 12, 1898 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian painter who is best known for his portraits and his genre representations of Hungarian country life. During his lifetime he was one of the most valued painters in his country. His realistic paintings could be found in many wealthy households.

Life

Barabás began his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1829 and 1830. After he returned to Cluj in 1830 , he learned the art of lithography from Gábor Barra. From 1831 Barabás spent two years in Bucharest , where he also became a portrait painter. From 1834 to 1835 he was on a study trip to Italy. Artistically, Barabás remained influenced by the Viennese taste in art during his studies. His portraits are often small-format and influenced by the Biedermeier style. It is artistically significant for two main reasons. His work in Budapest shaped the art scene of the time, and his paintings capture the history and culture of his country. One of his most important portraits is that of Franz Liszt ; The large-format picture “The laying of the foundation stone”, in which Barabás recorded the ceremony with which the construction of the Budapest Chain Bridge began in 1842, also gives an insight into social life . He also produced lithographs throughout his life , some of which had a high artificial value.
