Neckenmarkt Castle

The castle Neckenmarkt , also known as Castle Eckendorf was a hilltop castle site not far from Neckenmarkt in the district of Oberpullendorf in Austria's Burgenland .

history

The complex, which is documented as Eckendorf Castle , was probably built in the first half of the 13th century by Laurentius Aba , a son of Peter Aba , a member of an old Hungarian clan. As early as 1289, the castle was completely destroyed in the turmoil of war between the Austrian Duke Albrecht and the Güssing Counts (noble family von Heder), the 2nd Güssing feud mentioned in history . He is said to have given the order to overthrow the tower by undermining it. 50 women and 30 children were allegedly rescued from the burning castle, while all the men perished.

nature

The castle was located on the western hill above Neckenmarkt. Today only a few remains of the wall remain in the area of the Lange Linie area . The ravine is considered part of the fortification. In the municipality of Neckenmarkt there is also a reed named Burgstall, which indicates that there was a castle-like structure at this point in earlier times.
