Augusto Santos Silva (born August 20, 1956 in Miragaia , Porto ) is a Portuguese social scientist and politician of the Socialist Party . He was Minister for Parliamentary Affairs in the Sócrates I cabinet and, from 26 November 2015, the Foreign Minister of Portugal in the Costa I cabinet .

Life

Augusto Santos Silva completed his history studies at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Porto and received his doctorate in 1992 in the sociology of culture and communication at the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, the renowned university institute for social and business sciences, technology and architecture. Since 1981 Santos Silva has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Porto, and since 1999 has also been the Academic Council for Social Sciences.

Santos Silva was a member of the National Education Council from 1996 to 1999, and from 1997 to 1999 he was the Portuguese representative in the Council of Europe's Civic Education Project . From 1998 to 1999 he was the rector of the University of Porto.

Augusto Santos Silva has been a member of the Socialist Party (PS) since 1990, a member of the National Party Commission since 1998 and of the Party Secretariat since 2006. Between 1994 and 1999 Santos Silva was a member of the district parliament of Nevogilde (Porto). However, Augusto Santos Silva began his actual political career initially as State Secretary in the Education Administration ( Administração Educativa ) of the first Guterre cabinet between 1999 and 2000. On April 9, 2000, he became Minister of Education in the same government, and on March 7, 2001, he moved to the Ministry of Culture . After the parliamentary elections in 2002 , he represented the constituency of Miragaia as a member of the Portuguese parliament in the 2002-2005 legislative period. During this time Santos Silva headed the parliamentary party committees of the PS for the areas of culture, science and higher education. After the Socialist Party's victory in the 2005 parliamentary elections , Prime Minister José Sócrates appointed Augusto Santos Silva as the new Minister for Parliamentary Affairs .

From 2009 to 2011, Silva was Minister of Defense in the Sócrates II cabinet .

António Costa , who was appointed Prime Minister in 2015 , appointed Silva to the Costa I cabinet as Portuguese Foreign Minister .

In addition to his work as a politician, Augusto Santos Silva is very often involved in journalistic areas. Between 1978 and 1986 he worked for the cultural section of the Jornal de Notícias . Between 1997 and 1998 he was chronicler of the TSF-Rádio Jornal . From 1992 to 1999 as well as from 2002 to 2005 he was a columnist of the Público . During his time as a member of parliament, he also headed the Acção Socialista , the official newspaper of the Socialist Party. He is also the author of numerous sociological and educational works.
