General election in Portugal 2002
The Portuguese parliamentary elections on March 17, 2002 took place after the dissolution of parliament in December 2001. They resulted in a majority of the center-right parties: PSD and CDS-PP . As a result of the election, José Manuel Barroso was appointed Prime Minister of Portugal by the President of the Republic, Jorge Sampaio . In the election, 5,473,655 valid votes were cast, which corresponds to a turnout of 61.48%.
Electoral system
The seats in each constituency are divided according to the largest average method of proportional representation (PR), conceived by the Belgian mathematician Victor d'Hondt in 1899. Although there is no legal limit on participation in the allocation of seats in the National Assembly, the application of the d' Hondt procedure creates a de facto threshold at the constituency level.
