General election in Portugal 1980
The parliamentary elections in Portugal in 1980 took place on October 5th.
Political background
The election campaign took place in a politically very heated atmosphere. The center-right government made up of the PSD , CDS and PPM of the Democratic Alliance (AD), which has been in office since January 1980, openly propagated the “liberation of the economy from socialism” under its Prime Minister Francisco Sá Carneiro , ie it directly opposed the essential results of the Carnation Revolution from 1974. The government tried step by step to abolish or relativize the nationalization of large parts of the key industries and the banking sector, but also of elements of the agrarian reform, which took place in 1975. This led to violent clashes with the country's political left, which still included parts of the military, and which, in contrast, wanted to deepen, or at least preserve, the results of the 1974 revolution.
These disputes over the “burdens” or “achievements” of the revolution also led to a direct confrontation between President António Ramalho Eanes , who leaned towards the moderate left, and Prime Minister Sá Carneiro. The AD therefore did not support the re-election of President Eanes in the presidential elections that were also due in 1980, but instead put up General António da Silva Osório Soares Carneiro, who was unable to beat Eanes on December 7, 1980.
In contrast, the parties of the center-right coalition in the parliamentary election of October 5, 1980 not only confirmed the result of the December 1979 election, but improved it again, because the AD had succeeded in expanding its leading position and again the absolute one Achieve majority of mandates.
As in the past, the opposition did not act uniformly. The moderate left came together in the "Republican and Socialist Front" (FRS) formed in June 1980. Under the leadership of the Socialist Party , two smaller social democratic groups, UEDS and ASDI, also worked in the FRS, but neither of them politically survived the 1980s.
In addition, as in the parliamentary elections last year, the Alliance United People (APU), an alliance of the Communist Party (PCP) and the Portuguese Democratic Movement - Democratic Election Commission (MPD / CDE), competed.
Election results
Francisco Sá Carneiro was reappointed Prime Minister, but died on the night of December 4, 1980 when his plane crashed shortly after take-off on the way to Porto over the Lisbon suburb of Camarate for reasons that have not yet been finally clarified.
The turnout was 83.94 percent. The count was carried out according to the D'Hondt method.
