The Palácio de São Bento (German Palace of St. Benedict ) is located in the Estrela municipality of Lisbon in Portugal .

The Palace of St. Benedict has been the seat of the Portuguese Parliament ( Assembleia da República ) since 1834 . The palace can be reached via a wide external staircase. The staircase, built in 1941, is flanked on both sides by marble lions. At the main entrance below the neoclassical column front there are four female allegorical statues, which symbolize the virtues of moderation, justice, strength and reason. The six meter high and 30 meter long gable above the porch was decorated by the sculptor Simões de Almeida.

The building was initially a Benedictine monastery. It was erected in 1598. The Benedictine monks lived in the monastery until 1820. The building was damaged during the great earthquake in 1755. In 1834 the parliament moved into the building. The palace, which was officially called Palácio das Cortes (1834–1911), Palácio do Congresso (1911–1933) and Palácio da Assembleia Nacional (1933–1974), is now called the Palácio de São Bento.

Behind the parliament is the Palacete de São Bento , the "Small Palace of St. Benedict", which serves as the official seat of the Prime Minister , in an approximately two-hectare park . Public access is via Rua da Imprensa à Estrela.
