history

At the end of the 1980s, the Portuguese party, at times the third strongest, the Partido Renovador Democrático of the former President António Ramalho Eanes , lost massive amounts of importance and members and was on the verge of dissolution. The right-wing extremist Movimento de Acção Nacional , founded in 1985, took advantage of this opportunity and took over the party and its existing structures through a mass conversion. In 1999 the party renamed itself Partido Nacional Renovador and positioned itself strongly on the right in the otherwise very left dominated Portuguese party landscape. Since the party congress in June 2005, who studied designer directs José Pinto Coelho , the far-right party, particularly their judgment "Portugal aos Portugueses" ( "the Portuguese Portugal!") Is known. The party is also affiliated with a youth organization, the Juventude Nacionalista ("Nationalist Youth").

Appearances

The Partido Nacional Renovador is always noticed by its public appearances, be it through election posters or interviews with the chairman. In particular, the party has recently increased its criticism of Portuguese immigration laws and has called for an immediate ban on immigration. The election posters at Praça Marquês de Pombal , which keep making headlines, deserve a special mention . In some cases, the Lisbon city administration tried to prevent this, which, according to individual media, brought the party even more attention. In addition, there are always anti-Semitic , anti-Muslim and misogynistic statements.

For several years now, the party has also been working on a European level with other right-wing and right-wing extremist parties, including the Front National (France) and the NPD (Germany). With regard to foreign policy, the PNR advocates a “Europe of Nations” and demands a strong role for the individual nation states. The PNR also rejects Turkey's possible EU accession and describes Turkey as non-European in terms of its geography, culture and ethnic groups.

Despite their high level of awareness compared to other small Portuguese parties, this could not yet be reflected in the election results. Since its reconstitution in 1999, the party has not received a single parliamentary mandate.
