Life

In 1997, the then 16-year-old Jansen joined the band After Forever as a singer . After Mark Jansen , one of the band's founders and not related, left the formation in 2002 to form the band Epica , she was solely responsible for the lyrics.

In 1999 she began studying at the Rock Academy in Tilburg and took singing lessons at the Fontys Conservatory (both now part of the Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten run by the private university operator Fontys ). In 2004 she successfully completed her studies at the academy and began part-time studying musicals and operas at the Conservatory.

Since then she has taught herself, including at the rock academy with her own course called “Wanna Be a Star?”, Or in cooperation with a music school privately at home with singing lessons, band coaching and workshops. Since joining Nightwish as a permanent member, she had to stop her regular teaching work due to time constraints.

Outside of her band career, she took part in various other music projects, such as B. in the projects Ayreon and Star One of the Dutch musician and composer Arjen Lucassen . In addition, there were numerous collaborations u. a. with the band MaYaN, Devin Townsend , Evergrey and Timo Tolkki 's Avalon, founded by Mark Jansen in 2011 in addition to Epica .

After the breakup of After Forever in February 2009, she announced that she wanted to work with Jørn Viggo Lofstad ( Pagan's Mind ) on a new musical project called "Sinh". However, this project was discarded in favor of a new metal band with Joost van den Broek and Waldemar Sorychta called " ReVamp ". The debut album of the same name was released on May 28, 2010.

At the beginning of October 2012 she replaced the previous singer Anette Olzon with the symphonic metal band Nightwish during the ongoing Imaginaerum World Tour . Anette Olzon and Nightwish had previously split up. On October 9, 2013, Nightwish announced that Jansen is now officially engaged as a band member.

In February 2018, the Nuclear Blast label announced that the material, written ten years earlier with Jørn Viggo Lofstad - now under the project name Northward - will be released as an album in the course of 2018. In terms of style, Northward's music is based on hard rock, in contrast to the music of the main bands from Jansen and Lofstad. The pieces While Love Died and Get What You Give been previously released as singles. The album Northward was released on October 19, 2018.

In 2019 Floor Jansen took part in the 12th season of the TV show Beste Zangers der Nederlande (conceptually corresponds to the program Sing mein Song , which is produced in Germany for VOX ), which was broadcast from August 24 to October 12, 2019 on AVROTROS was broadcast.

Due to the success of her appearances at Beste Zangers , Jansen announced a solo tour in the Netherlands in January 2020, initially with six concerts. Due to the high demand - the first six shows were sold out after a little over a day - a total of four more concerts have been announced. The song material for the concerts consisted of the songs she had performed with Beste Zangers , songs from her repertoire that the other candidates had sung for her, and material from her career, including her previous bands After Forever and ReVamp.

On January 18, 2020, Jansen was awarded the Popprijs 2019 , the highest award in Dutch light music.

In spring 2020 Jansen sang the title song for the three-part TV documentary Kinderen in Oorlog: 75 Jaar Later (German: Children in War: 75 Years Later ), which was produced by the Dutch organization of the children's aid organization War Child in cooperation with the TV broadcaster SBS 6 was produced. The song, entitled De Beelden Blijven ( The Pictures Remain ), was released as a single on May 14, 2020.

style

Floor Jansen (2013)

The variability of her voice is characteristic of Jansen's singing, especially the contrast between her classically trained soprano and her "normal voice", which she varies from clear singing to powerful belting to rough "shouting". Combined with their large pitch range , this singing style was formative for the music of After Forever, in contrast to the growls of the two guitarists (one example is the song Dreamflight from the album After Forever ). In addition, Jansen has mastered growling techniques that she specifically used on the second ReVamp album Wild Card .

On the Nightwish album Endless Forms Most Beautiful the use of the "normal voice" dominates, her classical voice is rarely used on the album; in the chorus of the song Yours Is An Empty Hope she contributes the growls.

Private life

Jansen is the mother of a daughter whose father is her partner, the Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl . She sang in a choir on the band's 8th studio album, The Last Stand .

Others

Jansen's younger sister Irene Jansen is also active as a guest singer with Ayreon and Star One.
