Evergrey is a progressive metal - band from Gothenburg in Sweden .

Band history

Tom S. Englund live at Nosturi, March 2008

After Englund and Nöjd founded the band at the end of 1993 and recorded their first demos together with King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRoque, which was followed by a broken record deal and a brief guest performance by another singer, their debut album The Dark Discovery was released in 1998 by Noiseworks , which also included Keyboardist Will Chandra can be heard.

After Chandra left the band soon afterwards, the band continued with the four of them and was compared to Dream Theater and Tad Morose . This was followed by various tours through Germany with Kamelot and Crimson Glory, among others .

In 2001 In Search Of Truth was released , which was first published by the German music label InsideOut Music . With the new members Henrik Danhage, Michael Håkansson ( The Forsaken ) and Sven Karlsson ( Soilwork ) followed the next tour through Europe as support from Therion (openers were My Insanity ). After another change of keyboard player, the former Andromeda keyboard player gave a short guest appearance on a tour as headliner through France and Scandinavia and was soon replaced by Rikard Zander.

In 2003 the album Recreation Day followed , for which music videos were shot for Blinded and I'm Sorry . In addition, the drums were occupied by Jonas Ekdahl and a US tour with Arch Enemy was organized.

After The Inner Circle was released in 2004 , on which Englund's wife had sung a few lines as on the other albums, the band was supported by Iced Earth and Children of Bodom on a tour through North America. The double DVD A Night to Remember - Live 2004 , which was subsequently released for the double CD of the same name , made it to the top of the Swedish DVD charts in 2005.

Since 2004, Ekdahl, Zander and Danhage have also been running the death metal trio Death Destruction as a project parallel to their band activities.

The band switched from InsideOut Music to the SPV record label in 2008 .

In May 2010 the band announced on their homepage that guitarist Henrik Danhage and drummer Jonas Ekdahl would leave the band in "mutual friendship" in order to devote themselves to Death Destruction . Thereupon Jari Kainulainen announced his exit because of better earning opportunities. Marcus Jidell ( Royal Hunt ), Johan Niemann and Hannes Van Dahl have been announced as replacements .

style

Evergrey's music is quite dark, the lyrics are always dark. The band (Jonas Ekdahl) describes itself as “Melodic Dark Power Metal”, but the band has clear Thrash and Progressive influences, which is why the genre cannot be clearly defined. Was The Dark Discovery held thematically rather general, the later recordings were concept albums .

On In Search of Truth , which deals with paranoia , a man is convinced he was abducted by aliens. The American author Whitley Strieber was named as the source of inspiration for this work . The Inner Circle is about religious fanaticism, while Recreation Day is all about death.
