Royal Hunt is a band from Denmark whose music style is based on Progressive Metal and Melodic Rock . It was founded in 1988 under the name "Apart" by keyboardist André Andersen and in 1989 it was renamed "Royal Hunt". In addition to Andersen as the only remaining founding member, there are currently musicians from four nations (Denmark, Russia , Sweden , USA ) in the band. Royal Hunt has sold over a million albums worldwide.

Surname

The name "Royal Hunt" is derived from a painting André Andersen saw in a museum.

history

André Andersen and bassist Steen Morgensen formed the band in 1988. Andersen, a classical pianist, wanted to incorporate his two main influences, classical and rock, into his music. In their early days they played as the opening act for renowned groups such as Talisman or Saga . With drummer Kenneth Olsen and singer Henrick Brockmann, the band began to work on their first album called Land of Broken Hearts in 1993 . At the time the band did not have a guitarist. Jacob Kjær was used on the album, and he joined the band permanently a year later.

Brockmann left the band in December 1994 after the release of Clown in the Mirror and was replaced by DC Cooper. In this formation they toured the USA for the first time, as the opening act for Warrant . After that, the third studio album called Moving Target was released. The title Far Away , which was dedicated to the victims of the earthquake in Kobe , reached number 1 in the Japanese charts. During the tour through Europe, on which they played in the opening act for the Swiss band Gotthard , Olsen fell ill with pneumonia . Shortly afterwards, he was diagnosed with tinnitus . The band needed a replacement, so Allen Sørensen joined the band. Within 36 hours he flew to Switzerland, rehearsed and stood on stage with the group.

By now, Royal Hunt were so popular in Japan that the Japanese Wrestling Association asked the band to record music for their fighting events. This then happened with the three titles Champions of Wrestling , Wake Up and Chono Masahiro . The fourth album Paradox was released in 1997. This is a concept album . After changing labels and being signed to Steamhammer , Paradox was re-released with a bonus live CD.

In 1998 the band decided it was time to take a break. At that time it was also decided that it would be best not to work with Cooper anymore. Rumor has it that this was due to the self-titled and press-acclaimed solo album released by Cooper that same year. So John West became the group's new singer. The album Fear , released the following year, was the first with him.

The Mission , released in 2001, is also a concept album. It is based on the science fiction novella The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury . Royal Hunt released their sixth studio album Eye Witness with drummer Allan Tschicaja in 2003. Guitarist Jacob Kjær and bassist Steen Morgensen left the band at the end of the year. The two were replaced by Marcus Jidell on guitar and Per Schelander on bass. Kenneth Olsen also returned to the cast. In 2005, Paper Blood was published, with Allan Sørensen again behind the drums. 2007 Mark Boals replaced the previous singer John West. In 2008 the eighth studio album Collision Course… Paradox 2 was recorded with Boals . On January 20, 2010 a new album called X was released .

In early 2011 there was a meeting between André Andersen and DC Cooper. This meeting resulted in a small tour that was a great success. In the end, the decision was made to continue making music together. The successful singer, who can be heard on the two classics Moving Target and Paradox , returned firmly to the band. On December 2, 2011, the new album Show Me How to Live was released .
