Warrant is an American glam metal - tape , the end of the 1980s was very popular and two double platinum albums published.

Band history

Warrant was founded in Los Angeles in July 1984 by guitarist Erik Turner and bassist Jerry Dixon. The first years were marked by several personnel changes until March 1987 when guitarist Joey Allen joined a permanent line-up consisting of Turner, Dixon, Allen, singer Jani Lane and drummer Steven Chamberlin. Lane soon took on the role of songwriter for the band. In September 1987, Warrant recorded the Heaven demo for Paisley Park Records, Prince's record label , and signed with manager Tom Hulett a month later.

In January 1988, Warrant recorded another song for A&M Records . Game of War was slated to appear on the soundtrack of Bill & Ted's Crazy Journey through Time , but A&M later decided against it. After not honoring the option to sign a label, the band members became impatient and signed to Columbia Records in April 1988 . The recordings for the first album began in May, as the producer was Beau Hill ( Ratt , Kix , Winger , Europe , Alice Cooper ). Work on the album was delayed for a few months as singer Jani Lane had a nervous breakdown after catching his girlfriend and best friend in bed together. In September Warrant went on a first tour of the United States with the glam rock band D'Molls , another with Britny Fox followed in December.

The debut album Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich (DRFSR) was finally released on January 31, 1989. In addition, a video for the first single Down Boys was released, which was in rotation on MTV . DRFSR entered the Billboard album chart in March, where the album stayed for 65 weeks. It reached its highest position in September with 10th place. In early July, DRFSR was awarded a gold record , followed by a platinum record in August. The single Heaven , which was released from the album in July, became the band's greatest success. The song reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was awarded a gold record for over 500,000 units sold in the United States in September, followed by another from Canada a little later. Warrant toured a lot in 1989, playing with Mötley Crüe , Paul Stanley , Queensrÿche , Poison , Kingdom Come , Danger Danger and Skid Row , among others . In the fall, Big Talk and Sometimes She Cries, two more singles with video were released. Eventually, DRFSR received a second platinum award in the United States for the album, another for a live video, and once platinum in Canada.

In February 1990, Warrant began recording another album in Hawaii . Cherry Pie , which was released on September 11, 1990, was provided with the Parental Advisory sticker due to the bonus track Ode to Tipper Gore . At the same time, the title track was released as a single, it reached number 10 in the United States and Warrants was the only release also number 35 in the UK. The album reached number 7 on the US album charts and went platinum five weeks after its release. Warrant toured with Poison over the next few weeks, but the two bands split in January 1991 after an argument. Warrant then went on a first European tour as support for David Lee Roth , but had to cancel after the fourth show after singer Jani Lane fell off the stage in Birmingham and broke several ribs. On their return, a platinum award from Canada for the album Cherry Pie was waiting for them. In the United States, it was awarded double platinum shortly afterwards. According to the band, Cherry Pie has sold 2.7 million copies.

The recordings for Dog Eat Dog began in February 1992. The album, whose style was different from its two predecessors and was much more experimental, was released on August 25th, reached number 25 in the album charts and was awarded gold. Shortly after publication, Warrant came to support Iron Maiden on a European tour and played at Monsters of Rock , among others . This was followed by a US tour with Lynch Mob .

In February 1993 Jani Lane left the band. As grunge grew , the glam metal bands lost their popularity and in March Warrant was terminated by Columbia Records. Shortly thereafter, manager Tom Hulet died in June. While Jani Lane returned after a short time, Joey Allen left the band in May 1994 and Steven Sweet in June. In September 1994 Warrant received a new recording contract from CMC Records. The recordings for Ultraphobic were again supported by producer Beau Hill.

The next few years were marked by numerous line-up changes. Only the founding members Erik Turner and Jerry Dixon stayed with the band permanently. Although Warrant continued to release albums and toured a lot, there was no major success.

In January 2008, after longstanding rumors , the William Morris Agency announced that the band would be reunited with their original line-up consisting of Turner, Dixon, Lane, Allen and Sweet. The first appearance in this constellation took place at the Rocklahoma Festival. In September 2008 Lane left the band, however, and was replaced by Robert Mason ( Lynch Mob ). With Mason, the band went into the studio in February 2011 and recorded the album Rockaholic , which was released in May 2011.

On August 11, 2011, Jani Lane was found dead in a hotel room in the Woodland Hills borough of Los Angeles. While the cause of death was initially unclear, acute alcohol poisoning was later established as the cause of death.
