Crimson Glory is a band that was founded in 1982 in Sarasota , Florida and is classified as US Power Metal or Progressive Metal . The singer's very high vocal range is characteristic. Between 1986 and 1999 she released four albums and toured with greats such as Metallica , Ozzy Osbourne , Queensrÿche , UDO , Doro and Anthrax .

history

The group formed in 1982. Ben Jackson, Jeff Lords, and Dana Burnell (other name: Dana St. James) had previously worked together in a group called "Pierced Arrow". For a short time the newly founded band was called "Beowulf". Public appearances were initially not completed.

In 1986 the self-titled debut album was released, first on Par Records, then on Roadrunner Records . As a result, Crimson Glory appeared in Europe in the opening act for "Anthrax" . The silver-colored masks that the band members consistently wore during their performances attracted particular attention.

In 1988 the follow-up album "Transcendence" was released, which had been recorded in the Morrisound Recording Studio and was released by MCA (USA) and Roadrunner Records Europe (Europe). It was rated very positively by many critics. The band's sound had now solidified and was shaped by Midnight's doubled vocals and his extraordinarily high pitch. Conceptually, the album followed seamlessly from its predecessor. The band members now only wore partial masks, which still covered a large part of their faces. Crimson Glory supported the tours of bands like Ozzy Osbourne , Queensrÿche , UDO , Doro and again Anthrax through North America, Europe and Japan. At the end of the touring phase, guitarist Ben Jackson and drummer Dana Burnell left the band.

Despite mostly positive reactions, Crimson Glory was not very successful commercially.

In 1991 the third album "Strange and Beautiful" was released on Atlantic Records . The style had changed completely, the band concept was now heavily commercialized, the mystical-mysterious image both musically and visually was discarded. The band completed a club tour of the USA, which ended with a joint appearance with Ozzy Osbourne, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains . The radical new direction won the band only a few new followers, while a large number of previous fans of Crimson Glory turned away. The album also largely fell through with the critics. Shortly before the start of the tour, singer Midnight had surprisingly left the band. He was replaced by David Van Landing (1964-2015, formerly Tony MacAlpine ). A planned tour of Japan did not materialize because the band broke up.

Drenning tried to remodel Crimson Glory. The band name was given up and an album was released under the names "Crush" and "Erotic Liquid Culture". Musically, the direction taken since "Strange and Beautiful" was continued. None of these projects received any significant attention. The albums are out of print today.

In 1998 Drenning and Jackson re-founded the band together with singer Wade Black. The album "Astronomica", released in 1999, was stylistically based on the original concept. Steve Wacholz (formerly Savatage ) did not appear on the album. After a short tour, however, the band broke up again, the members pursued various solo projects.

Around 2005 the band announced their re-establishment and announced the album "Metatron, Lucifer and the Divine Chaos". Furthermore, “Astronomica”, sung by Midnight, should be reissued. 2006 and 2007 Crimson Glory appeared at various events with Midnight and Wade Black, but without the announced album was released.

In 2007, Crimson Glory split from Midnight. There is evidence that he was struggling with drinking problems at the time. A police photo from 2007 shows him in apparently poor health. On July 8, 2009, Midnight died of kidney and liver failure at the age of 47.

In 2010 the band, which up until then had occasionally appeared in alternating line-ups, formed anew in the original line-up and announced the arrival of Todd La Torre as singer in April . At the beginning of May 2010 four old Crimson Glory titles with LaTorre's vocals were published on Youtube .

In 2011 the band performed in Europe, including at the Bang Your Head Festival in Balingen, Swabia . Only pieces from the first two albums were played.

In February 2013, Todd La Torre announced his departure from Crimson Glory. He justified this with the general passivity of the band.
