So far the band has released ten studio albums. The current album Will to Power was released in September 2017.

Band history

Arch Enemy live at Wacken Open Air 2018

Arch Enemy was formed in 1996 after the end of the band Carcass, when Michael Amott (ex-Carcass and Carnage) and singer Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage) teamed up with Christopher Amott (guitar) and Daniel Erlandsson (initially only studio drums). The debut album is called Black Earth and was released in 1996 on Wrong Again Records . It was reasonably successful in Japan and Sweden. Then the band switched to Century Media . In 1998 Stigmata followed , from which bassist Martin Bengtsson was hired. This album was successful in both Europe and the United States . The role of bassist was taken over by Sharlee D'Angelo from Burning Bridges in 1999 . Burning Japan Live followed soon afterwards in 1999 , which was originally only planned as a special edition for Japan, but was then released worldwide due to the demands of the fans.

Johan Liiva left the band in November 2000 and Angela Gossow from Cologne took over the vocal part in 2001 . Angela had Michael Amott, one during an interview that had taken place earlier in the same year demo tape pass. She was positively received by the majority of fans, although a singer is unusual for a death metal band.

Their first album with the band was Wages of Sin , which was released in late 2001. In December of the same year Arch Enemy played at the Beast Feast 2002 in Japan with Slayer and Motörhead . In 2003 Anthems of Rebellion was released , which was followed by several tours. In November 2004 the EP Dead Eyes See No Future was released . After the 2005 album Doomsday Machine was recorded, Christopher Amott took some time off to continue his studies. Fredrik Åkesson took his place. This album experienced strong heavy metal influences, which Arch Enemy intended. For the following tour and the appearance at Ozzfest , Åkesson was replaced by guitarist Gus G. ( Firewind , Nightrage ). On this tour they played in Germany together with Spawn and Trivium .

From March 2007, Christopher Amott returned to the band and replaced Fredrik Åkesson, who switched to Opeth , on guitar. The band then worked on the album Rise of the Tyrant , which was released on September 24, 2007.

On September 25, 2009 Arch Enemy released their album The Root of All Evil . The band has only re-recorded songs from the first three albums, on which the former singer Johan Liiva could be heard, with Angela Gossow. On March 5, 2012, Christopher Amott left the band again and was replaced by Arsis guitarist Nick Cordle .

On March 17, 2014, the band announced Alissa White-Gluz as the new singer on their Facebook page, as Angela Gossow wanted to turn to a new chapter in her life and spend more time with her family. Gossow stayed with the band as business manager in the background. At the same time, Alissa White-Gluz confirmed this message on her side. She was previously the singer of the Canadian metal band The Agonist .

On November 17th, the band announced that guitarist Nick Cordle had left the band. At the same time it was announced that Jeff Loomis ([Ex-] Nevermore / Conquering Dystopia) will join the band as guitarist for all tour and concert dates until at least the end of 2015 from November 26th.

A new album called Will to Power was released on September 8, 2017.
