Michael Amott (born July 28, 1970 , London , United Kingdom ) is a Swedish guitarist who grew up in Halmstad and founded the bands Arch Enemy , Spiritual Beggars and Carnage as well as a former member of the band Carcass . He is the older brother of Christopher Amott .

biography

Michael started playing guitar when he was a teenager. Influenced by guitarists like Frank Marino , Dave Mustaine and Michael Schenker , he developed a style of strong vibratos, memorable melody lines, powerful riffs and a preference for two-part guitar lines. His solo style is often compared to that of Michael Schenker.

In 1988 Michael founded the death metal band Carnage with singer Johan Liiva . They released two demos that caught the scene's interest. When they wanted to release their first album in 1990, the band broke up.

In the same year he went to the then scene directors Carcass and in 1991 released the album Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious with them . The album was considered by many to be a masterpiece of death metal, not least because of Amott's unique work. In 1994 the band released their best-selling album, Heartwork . It had a major impact on today's Melodic Death Metal .

Michael left the band in 1993 because of various artistic views within the band. In the same year he decided to form a stoner rock band, the Spiritual Beggars. A year later they released their debut album Spiritual Beggars and received a recording deal with Music for Nations, with whom they released Another Way to Shine in 1996 .

In 1996 Michael accepted an offer from WAR Records to start a Melodic Death Metal project in the style of Carcass, whose album Heartwork was now seen as the masterpiece of the genre. With this in mind, he turned to Carnage's original singer, Johan Liiva, and his younger brother, Christopher Amott, who was still attending music school at the time, and founded Arch Enemy with them.

The first single from the album Black Earth , Bury Me an Angel , became surprisingly popular in Japan, which is why they were offered a contract with Toys Factory, which invited them to tour Japan. So Michael decided to turn Arch Enemy into a professional band. For this purpose he brought drummer Peter Wildoer and bassist Martin Bengtsson into the band.

After the Japan tour, Michael returned to the Spiritual Beggars and published Mantra III in 1998 . In the same year he released the first album outside of Japan, Stigmata, with Arch Enemy under Century Media . It was well received which is why they toured the rest of the year. Amott also recorded some solos for Candlemass at this time .

In 1999 Arch released Enemy Burning Bridges , on which the last recordings with singer Johan Liiva should be.

In 2000 Michael released Ad Astra with the Spiritual Beggars, only to return to Arch Enemy afterwards, where he brought German amateur singer Angela Gossow into the band to replace Johan Liiva . He 'd received a demo from her years earlier when she interviewed Arch Enemy for Metal Hammer .

When they released Wages of Sin in 2001 , the band received worldwide recognition. Michael returned to the Spiritual Beggars in 2002 to release On Fire . With the album Anthems of Rebellion 2003 Arch Enemy set another milestone. The video for We will rise was first broadcast on American MTV . The band achieved even greater popularity and toured until the next CD release Doomsday Machine in 2005. Michael returned to the Spiritual Beggars once more, releasing Demons with them that same year . He played as a guest in the bands The Haunted on the album One Kill Wonder in the song Bloodletting 'and in the song Murder Fantasies by Kreator .

Equipment

Amott designed his own signature guitar , the "Ninja V" , for ESP . In mid-2008 Amott moved from ESP to Dean Guitars as an endorser. At the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchant) 2009, Amott's new signature guitars were presented for the first time, the "USA Michael Amott Signature Tyrant" and the "Michael Amott Tyrant Bloodstorm". He currently uses Randall amps, previously he had a contract with Krank Amps.
