Dave Mustaine (2016)

David Scott "Dave" Mustaine (born September 13, 1961 in La Mesa , California ) is an American musician. He is the founder, main songwriter , lead singer and guitarist of the metal band Megadeth .

Life

Musical career

Mustaine, who has German and French roots, grew up in various suburbs in Southern California. His parents divorced when he was a child.

Mustaine played guitar as a teenager and was a member of the band Panic. He left this in 1981 because he accepted an offer from the newly founded formation Metallica to play as guitarist alongside Lars Ulrich , James Hetfield and bassist Ron McGovney . In 1983, shortly before the release of Metallica's first album, he was fired because of alcohol problems and personal differences with his band members. He was promptly replaced by Kirk Hammett , who previously played in the group Exodus . At this time, Mustaine developed a major drug problem that repeatedly overshadowed his later career.

Mustaine then founded the metal band Megadeth with David Ellefson . Mustaine, who viewed his resignation from Metallica as a personal affront, avoided personal contact with his ex-band colleagues over the next few years. Especially with James Hetfield , lead singer of Metallica, from then on he fought a "war" of words in interviews, encounters and concerts.

In 1989 the Mustaine Megadeth line-up consisted of Marty Friedman on guitar, Nick Menza on drums and Dave Ellefson on bass; Mustaine was a guitarist and singer. With this formation, Megadeth experienced their peak between 1992 and 1995 with the albums Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia (or Hidden Treasures ).

Dave Mustaine is generally considered to be a difficult personality with strong narcissistic traits, which were also promoted by his drug use. Many of his band constellations did not last long for this reason.

From 1996 Mustaine played alongside Megadeth in the project MD.45 with Lee Ving from the LA punk band Fear . The name is made up of the inverted initials of Dave Mustaine and Lee Ving, with V and L translated from the Roman number system into Arabic numerals . The band released the album The Craving .

He has been married since 1990 and has two children.

In January 2002 Mustaine injured his radial nerve , whereupon he unceremoniously dissolved Megadeth. He sustained the injury when he fell asleep on a chair with his arm hanging over it. He was forced to give up playing guitar at short notice. With the injury healed, Mustaine seemed to have gotten to grips with years of drug problems. According to his own statement, he found personal answers to the question of the meaning of life in the Christian faith. He became a born again Christian in 2004 . Megadeth also formed again this year. Since Mustaine confessed to Christianity, he tried several times to prevent occult and satanic bands like Dissection and Rotting Christ from appearing and has since distanced himself from the song The Conjuring , a song from his album Peace Sells ... But Who's Buying? which he no longer wants to perform live due to its black magic content; the use of black magic ruined his life.

Mustaine at Gods of Metal 2007

In 2009, the dispute between Metallica and Dave Mustaine seemed to have settled, as Metallica decided to invite Mustaine to the party to mark her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Mustaine then wrote an open letter in which he reiterated his congratulations on the band's success. A first rapprochement between Lars Ulrich and Mustaine had already taken place a few years earlier; this is portrayed in the documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster . There were also rumors in 2009 that Megadeth wanted to go on tour with Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax .

In 2009 the Megadeth album Endgame was released ; Mustaine acted as the main songwriter here, as on earlier releases.

In 2010, the rumors from the previous year came true when Megadeth appeared for the first time as "The Big Four of Thrash" together with Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax as part of the Sonisphere Festival tour on June 16 in Warsaw . Further joint concerts as part of the tour followed. The performance on June 22, 2010 in the Vasil Levski National Stadium was broadcast internationally, partly live, in around 750 cinemas and released in October of that year as a concert DVD entitled The Big Four Live from Sofia, Bulgaria .

Mustaine in 2010

In August 2010 Mustaine brought his autobiography Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir on the market, the German translation was published in June 2011 under the title Mustaine: Meinruees Ich .

On February 12, 2017, Mustaine won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the Megadeth song Dystopia (from the album of the same name ) at the 59th Grammy Awards together with Kiko Loureiro , Dave Ellefson and Chris Adler .

Political opinions

Even before he joined the Christian revival movement, Mustaine expressed himself in a strongly negative way towards homosexuals. This would violate the Bible and as a Christian he rejects marriage between homosexuals .

Regarding the illegal immigration of Mexicans, he said:

"The beauty is gone when you see Americans sleeping on sidewalks and it makes me sick to think we have assholes in this country letting fucking Mexicans in. Who needs this shit?"

“The beauty of seeing Americans sleeping on the sidewalk is the end of it, and I feel sick when I imagine we have assholes in this country that the damn Mexicans let in. Who needs that shit? "

- Dave Mustaine : Interview in Sounds

In 1988 Mustaine caused a commotion when Megadeth gave a concert in Northern Ireland and he "unwittingly" expressed his sympathy for the Irish Republican Army (IRA).

In 2004 he expressed his sympathy for George W. Bush , since John Kerry would "ruin the country". In 2011 he called President Barack Obama "the president who divided the nation the most". Obama would, in his opinion, engage in class struggle. In March 2012, he commented on the television show George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight that Obama was not born in the United States.

In an interview, Mustaine supported Rick Santorum's presidential candidacy in 2012 and expressed his hope that Santorum would be elected president.

After running rampages in the summer of 2012 , he accused Obama of staging the rampages to ban firearms. Obama would turn America into a "Nazi state".
