Martin Adam "Marty" Friedman (born December 8, 1962 in Washington, DC ) is an American guitarist and presenter of a Japanese entertainment program about guitar playing.

biography

Marty Friedman is known for his improvisations and his mixture of western sound material and Asian-sounding phrasing. His melody playing is more chord-oriented than scale-oriented. His attack is very unconventional and he prefers upstrokes, bottom-up attacks.

He played with Megadeth from 1990 until the end of 1999 , where he served as lead guitarist. Before joining Megadeth, he founded the band Cacophony with Jason Becker in 1986 .

Before that he played with Vixen (not to be confused with the women's band of the same name ) and the successor band Hawaii .

Together with Jason he released two albums, Go Off! and Speed Metal Symphony , which are milestones in the guitar world to this day.

He currently lives in Shinjuku , Tokyo , Japan and is divorced from his ex-wife Chihiro. He hosted from 2006 to 2007 on TV Tokyo with rock Fujiyama own TV show, 2005 was a regular member of the broadcast Hebimeta-san and also occurs regularly in other programs. He also composed the piece Kirei na Senritsu by Kotoko .

Megadeth

After Cacophony broke up in 1989, Marty Friedman introduced himself to the thrash metal band Megadeth , following a tip from his friend Jeff Loomis . Friedman's audition can be seen on the Arsenal of Megadeth DVD . The first album with Megadeth was Rust in Peace , which went platinum in the United States . Stylistically, Friedman continued his guitar playing from his time with Cacophony and embedded it in the music of Megadeth. In July 1992 Megadeth released the album Countdown to Extinction , which became the band's most commercially successful album to date and went double platinum. Friedman played on the following album Youthanasia , as well as on Cryptic Writings and Risk . After five studio albums, innumerable concerts and several tours, Friedman left the band in December 1999. During the time with Friedman, Megadeth sold over ten million units. At the same time, the line-up with Friedman on guitar is seen as the most stable line-up in the band's history.
