Peace Sells… But Who's Buying? ( English for: "Peace sells ... but who will buy it?" ) is the second studio album by the US thrash metal band Megadeth . It was first published on September 19, 1986. The album is one of the 1001 albums You Must Hear Before You Die , German "1001 albums that you have to hear before you die".
Emergence
Originally the project was led by a small label called Combat Records . This resulted in the first mix of the album. Eventually Capitol Records bought the rights to the album and a new mix was created. In 2004 Dave Mustaine created a new mix and the album was re-mastered .
The album cover and title track dealt with disillusionment , politics , the Cold War and military combat. The themes reappeared frequently in later Megadeth albums. The cover is an ironic portrayal of the Cold War. Against a red and orange sky, it shows the UN headquarters shortly after a nuclear attack. In the foreground is Vic Rattlehead, the title character of many Megadeth covers. He is leaning on a sign that says "For Sale".

background
- Wake Up Dead
- The song is about a man who cheats on his wife and sneaks into his house, knowing that if his wife finds out about the relationship, she will kill him.
- The conjuring
- This song describes a ritual, with the last verses written from the devil's point of view . Mustaine now distances himself from this song and its black magic content and therefore no longer wants to perform it live.
- Devil's Island
- Devil's Iceland are the thoughts of a prisoner on Devil's Island again.
Single: Wake Up Dead
- Wake Up Dead - 3:40
- Good Mourning / Black Friday (Live) - 7:00
- Devil's Island (Live) - 5:40
The title Devil's Island can only be found on the 12 " edition of the single.
reception
Along with Rust in Peace , the album is often cited as the musically best of the early phase of Megadeth. The editors of Rock Hard voted the album 22nd in their best list of 500 albums. Editor-in-chief Holger Stratmann wrote that it was “a classic in every way” and “absolutely top class”. In contrast to its predecessor Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good! the production is considerably better, and the lyrics and the Johnny Rotten- influenced vocals of Mustaines are "never better than on this album".
Peace Sells… reached number 76 on the Billboard charts in the USA and was able to stay there for a total of 47 weeks.
