United Abominations (English for: "United Abominations") is the eleventh studio album by the American metal band Megadeth . It was released on Roadrunner Records in May 2007 . It was the first with brothers Shawn and Glen Drover and bassist James LoMenzo. It received mostly good reviews. In the US, it reached eighth place, the highest chart price since Youthanasia .

Emergence

After the release of the previous album The System Has Failed , guitarist Glen Drover ( Eidolon ) and after a short interlude with former drummer Nick Menza came instead of Drover's brother Shawn in the band. Iced Earth's bassist James McDonough , who, according to Dave Mustaine, “didn't fit in”, was replaced in 2006 by Black Label Society's James LoMenzo . Megadeth signed with Roadrunner for United Abominations , but struggled to get the rights from previous record labels Sanctuary and Capitol . As a producer, Mustaine chose Andy Sneap , with whom he “got on brilliantly”.

Music genre

Dave Mustaine said about the musical direction that he "did not want to make another inflated, big rock record".

“Megadeth are not a rock band, but at home somewhere between speed and thrash metal , with fusion , jazz and classical elements. A classic Megadeth song has peppered lyrics and jazz-influenced solo breaks. Well, why did that not exist for a while? It was because the typical hit pattern opposes it. "

- Dave Mustaine

Outstanding on the album is the piece À Tout le Monde (Set Me Free) , which was already released on Youthanasia and was re-recorded as a duet with Cristina Scabbia by Lacuna Coil .

Song content

Mustaine Amerikhastan lyrically referred to it as “ Holy Wars Part 2”, inspired by the TV series 24 with Kiefer Sutherland , it is about religious prejudice and the fear of a “clash of cultures”. In Washington Is Next , Mustaine addressed the "fact that great empires inevitably collapse at some point because of their uncontrollable size." Among other things, referring to the title, a modification of " United Nations ", Mustaine said:

“Do I think the world has mighty problems? Yes it is. Where the hell is the UN? Why is terrorism getting so out of control? It was never as bad as it is now. "
