Vincent Colaiuta (born February 5, 1956 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American drummer . He participated in the studio works of many artists and is considered one of the most influential drummers of our time.

Career as a musician

In addition to the drums, Vinnie Colaiuta also learned guitar and organ earlier . He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston for a year , then moved to Los Angeles and played drums in clubs and bars. In April 1978, after an audition with Frank Zappa, he was engaged as a studio and live drummer. He worked for Frank Zappa on the albums Joe's Garage , Tinsel Town Rebellion and Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar , among others , which helped him to break through in the music business. He benefited from the fact that he feels comfortable in many styles of music, for example in the areas of pop , rock , country , jazz , blues and metal . A producer reportedly once told him that if Tony Williams and Steve Gadd were thrown into a blender, Vinnie Colaiuta would come out.

After leaving Zappa in 1980, Vinnie Colaiuta played with various artists, including Herbie Hancock , Jeff Beck , Joni Mitchell , Barbra Streisand , Chaka Khan and Robben Ford .

Collaboration with Sting

In 1990, after a successful audition, Colaiuta was inducted into Sting 's touring band to promote the then current album The Soul Cages . Colaiuta then stayed with Sting and played with him the albums Ten Summoner's Tales and Mercury Falling . He can also be heard on the CDs Brand New Day and Sacred Love . In September 2003 Colaiuta worked again with Sting to present the album Sacred Love live with him . He then turned down the offer to be on Sting's world tour. Since the end of October 2011, Vinnie Colaiuta has been performing live again with Sting on the Back to Bass Tour after more than fifteen years .

Equipment

From 1997 to 2012 Colaiuta played Gretsch drums on the "Vinnie Colaiuta Signature" series made for him. From the beginning of his career he played exclusively Zildjian - pool , on whose development it was involved, and sticks the same company. He also used DW - Pedals . He also uses Remo drum heads. In April 2012 Vinnie Colaiuta switched to Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals. Since June 2016 Colaiuta has been playing Gretsch Drums again.
