Gino Vannelli (born June 16, 1952 in Montreal ) is a Canadian jazz , rock and pop singer.

The son of a jazz singer learned jazz percussion as a child and studied music theory at McGill University . He formed his first band at the age of twelve, the next - Jacksonville 5 - a year later with his brother Joe Vannelli . At the age of 17 he released the single Never Cry Again on RCA Records under the pseudonym Van Elli .

In the early 1970s he went to the USA with his brother, where he became known with several albums on A&M Records . With his songs influenced by rhythm and blues and jazz , he appeared in the opening act for Stevie Wonder and was the first white musician to appear on the program Soul Train .

With the release of the album Powerful People in 1974, Gino Vannelli posted his first hit # 22 on the Billboard charts thanks to the single People Gotta Move . His breakthrough came in 1978 with the album Brother To Brother and the single I Just Wanna Stop . The album went platinum in the USA in the spring of 1979 , the single reached number 4 there and even topped the charts in Canada. The album Nightwalker , released in 1981, was another hit # 6 in the US with Living Inside Myself and was gold plated.

After a creative break, the album Black Cars was released in 1984 . With the single of the same name, which reached number 4 in Canada, as well as the second release, Hurts To Be In Love , Gino Vannelli was able to land two radio hits in Germany for the first time without making the big breakthrough. The most successful single in Germany was Wild Horses in 1987 from the album Big Dreamers Never Sleep , which rose to number 7 in the charts in Canada and was shown frequently in the MTV charts in particular .

In 1990 Vannelli settled in Portland, Oregon , where he built his own studio and founded a record label. In 1995 and 1998 he released two jazz-oriented albums on Verve Records . He then took singing lessons and turned to classical music. The album Canto (2003) was particularly successful in Europe. In 2006 the album These Are The Days was finally released , which consists of six new titles and six of his most successful hits. For his albums, Gino Vannelli has worked with musicians and arrangers such as Niels Lan Doky , Don Sebesky , Herb Alpert , Jimmy Haslip and Ernie Watts, among others .
