Randy Porter

Randy Porter is an American jazz pianist , composer, and music educator.

Porter, who grew up in San Diego , did not receive formal musical education until high school. He then attended Humboldt State University and the New England Conservatory , where he was tutored by Jaki Byard , Fred Hersch and Art Lande . He then went back to San Diego, where he initially accompanied traveling musicians such as Anita O'Day , Art Farmer , Harold Land and Clifford Jordan as a club pianist . In 1990 he moved to Portland (Oregon) and started his international music career. In the late 1990s he toured Europe in David Friesen's band and was involved in his albums The Name of a Woman and Midnight Mood . He also played with Gino Vannelli , Freddie Hubbard and Charles McPherson . He also appeared as the accompanist for singers Diane Schuur , Karrin Allyson , Rebecca Kilgore and Madeline Eastman . In 1994 he presented his debut album Forest 4 The Trees . He has also worked on the recordings of Stéphane Grappelli , Bob Magnusson , Ed Reed and Charles McPherson ( A Tribute to Charlie Parker , 2001).

He taught jazz piano, arrangement and improvisation at the University of Nevada, Reno (1996-98), the University of Oregon (2000/01) and jazz history at Lewis and Clark College (2003/04). He currently teaches jazz piano at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon .

Awards

Porter won the Jazziz and Newport Jazz Piano Competition in 1999 . His trio album Brio with Bob Magnusson and Joe LaBarbera was nominated for an Indie Award in 2001.
