Bob Magnusson

William Robert "Bob" Magnusson (born February 24, 1947 in New York City ) is a jazz bassist who emerged on the one hand as a studio musician and on the other hand as the leader of his group Road Work Ahead .

Live and act

Magnusson, son of a classical clarinetist, studied french horn and switched to double bass in 1967 . In 1968 he was a member of the Buddy Rich Big Band , immediately afterwards and again in 1972/73 of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra . In between he accompanied Sarah Vaughan (1971–72, again 1975–76), then to work with Art Pepper , Benny Golson , John Klemmer and Joe Farrell . Between 1979 and 1982 the band Road Work Ahead existed with the albums Revelation (1979) and Road Work Ahead (1980). Song For Janet Lee (1984) was also released under his own name . From 1983 to 1985 he accompanied Linda Ronstadt with Nelson Riddle's orchestra . As a studio musician in Los Angeles, he worked on recordings for Singers Unlimited , Natalie Cole , Neil Diamond , Bonnie Raitt , 10,000 Maniacs and Madonna . He also worked with jazz musicians such as Bud Shank , Laurindo Almeida , Shorty Rogers , Bob Cooper , Lou Donaldson , Clifford Jordan , George Cables , Joe Pass , Carl Fontana , Kenny Barron , Freddie Hubbard , Holly Hofmann and Slide Hampton .

He also worked as a music teacher at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood between 1977 and 1996 . In 1998, he joined the faculty at San Diego Mesa Community College and the Coronado School of the Arts , teaching harmony, music theory, and jazz improvisation. In 1999 his book The Art of the Walking Bass was published by Hal Leonard.
