Bobby Shew

Bobby Shew (born March 4, 1941 in Albuquerque , New Mexico) is an American trumpeter and flugelhorn player of modern jazz .

Live and act

Shew started playing guitar at the age of 8; He switched to the trumpet at the age of 10 and played in local dance bands at the age of 13. At the age of 15 he formed his own band, which he also performed with during his high school years. He then did his military service in the NORAD band as a soloist on the jazz trumpet. He then joined Tommy Dorsey's orchestra , then played in the Woody Herman Band on the initiative of Bill Chase , before moving to Della Reese and Buddy Rich , where he matured into an excellent lead trumpeter. Shew is one of the few lead trumpeters who are also excellent soloists. He also worked as a studio musician and in Las Vegas . In 1972 he moved to Los Angeles , where he worked with Art Pepper , Bud Shank , the quintet by Horace Silver , the combo of Frank Strazzeri - Sam Most , but also in the studios and big bands of Bill Holman , Louie Bellson , Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin ( Insights , 1976), Oliver Nelson , Bill Berry , Nat Pierce , Frank Capp's Juggernaut Orchestra , Ed Shaughnessy , Terry Gibbs , Benny Goodman , Maynard Ferguson , Neal Hefti , Don Menza, and Bob Florence .

Shew is also active as a music teacher and conducts international clinics and master classes; among others he taught Till Brönner and Ingolf Burkhardt . He also developed a breathing technique, the so-called Wedge Technique, with which trumpeters should use a larger proportion of their lungs without straining the groin area. This technique has established itself in jazz trumpet lessons and is also taught at music colleges. He served on the boards of the International Trumpet Guild and the International Association of Jazz Educators . He also worked for Yamaha in the instrument development of the Z line.
