Bob Florence
Robert C. "Bob" Florence (born May 20, 1932 in Los Angeles , California ; † May 15, 2008 Thousand Oaks , California) was an American jazz pianist , arranger and bandleader of modern jazz .
Live and act
Bob Florence studied piano at LA City College and took composition lessons from Wesley LaViolette . At the beginning of his career he was a pianist and arranger for Dave Pell ; then he played with Harry James , Les Brown , Jerry Fielding and the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra , and then worked for Si Zentner . Since the 1950s he has also worked as an arranger for Harry James, Louie Bellson , Stan Kenton , Buddy Rich , Count Basie , Doc Severinsen and the hr big band .
At the end of the 1950s he founded his first band, which included Herb Geller , Bud Shank , Frank Capp and Bob Enevoldsen , among others . Since then, Florence has been working on big band projects in the Los Angeles area , mainly with studio musicians and as accompanists for female singers. Since 1979 he has led a rehearsal band in Los Angeles, which was originally cast with six saxophones. In the 1970s he recorded albums for the Discovery label and in the 1990s for Mama Records .
Prizes and awards
In 2000 he won the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album . In 2001 he studied his own compositions and arrangements with the SWR Big Band , which were published under the title “Golden Milestone” and nominated for a Grammy. He won for his work on Linda in Wonderland (with Ian Fraser , Billy Byers and Chris Boardman, 1981) and Julie Andrews in Concert (with Ian Fraser, Chris Boardman, Billy Byers, J. Hill and Angela Morley , 1990) an Emmy each .
