Laurindo Almeida (* 2 September 1917 in Miracatú , São Paulo , † 26. July 1995 in Los Angeles ) was a Brazilian jazz - guitarist and composer .

Life

Almeida was introduced to music by his mother, a concert pianist. At the age of 19 he traveled to Europe and was influenced by the music of Django Reinhardt in Paris . When the Second World War broke out, he returned to Brazil and formed a guitar duo with the guitarist Garoto . In 1947 he worked in the band of the singer Carmen Miranda . This work took him to the USA, where he became a studio musician for film soundtracks in Hollywood . During this time he also composed for the first time for films. At the end of his life there were over 800 film scores for him.

In 1953/54 he was the band leader of "Brazilliance", a forerunner group of LA 4 .

Laurindo Almeida was one of the first, before Antônio Carlos Jobim , to popularize bossa nova in the USA. His album Guitar From Ipanema (1964), which he recorded with Irene Kral , won a Grammy . He toured for many years with the Modern Jazz Quartet , with whom he recorded the Concierto de Aranjuez , among others . In the 1970s he was very successful with the group The LA 4 (with Bud Shank , Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton ). From the 1950s until his death he lived exclusively in Los Angeles.
