Holly Hofmann

Holly Hofmann (* 20th April 1956 in Painesville , Ohio ) is an American flutist of modern jazz .

Life

Hofmann started playing the flute at the age of five; her father was a jazz amateur. She played jazz standards with her father at an early age , but received classical training from the age of seven and attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan . She then studied music at the Cleveland Institute of Music (Bachelor) and the University of Northern Colorado (Master); she also had lessons in New York with Frank Wess and Slide Hampton . After moving to San Diego in 1984, she became a professional jazz musician and has worked since then. a. with Bud Shank , James Moody, and Mundell Lowe . In 1989 she released her debut album Further Adventures (Capri), which featured Mike Wofford , with whom she has been married since 2000, as well as Bob Magnusson and Sherman Ferguson . Since then she has played with her own formations in the San Diego area, but also goes on tour internationally. She has been to Europe several times with Ray Brown's combo . In 2011 she was the musical director of the Jazz at Newport festival . In 2017 she also worked with the Ira B. Liss Big Band Jazz Machine .

In 2014 she won the Down Beat Critic Poll in the Rising Star Flute category.
