The Symmes Creek is a 113 km long right tributary of the Ohio River in the southern US state of Ohio . He drained an area of 925 square kilometers and is part of the river system of the Mississippi River . It drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio River and Mississippi River .

The Symmes Creek rises about 2 kilometers northwest of the village of Winchester in Jackson County . It then flows in a generally southerly direction through the Wayne National Forest and the counties Jackson , Gallia and Lawrence and flows into the Ohio River within the municipality of Chesapeake opposite the city of Huntington . Its main tributaries are the 18 miles long Sand Fork Symmes Creek and the 17 miles long Black Fork Symmes Creek . The United States Board on Geographic Names named the river Symmes Creek in 1902 . In the course of its history it was also called Simms, Big Creek and Symms Creek .
