Gallia County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Gallipolis .

The county is located in southern Ohio, bordering West Virginia and has an area of ​​1,220 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Vinton County , Meigs County , Mason County, West Virginia, Cabell County, West Virginia, Lawrence County, and Jackson County .

history

Gallia County was formed on March 25, 1803 from parts of Adams County and Washington County. It was named after the Latin word for France. In 1803, the federal government granted property to French migrants in Ohio after they had previously been cheated of their land.

Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Gallia County had 31,069 people in 12,060 households and 8,586 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.26 percent white, 2.70 percent African American, 0.43 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.11 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.61 percent of the population.

Of the 12,060 households, 33.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent were single households, and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.98 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.1 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,191 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,938. Males had a median income of $ 31,783 versus $ 22,829 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,183. 13.5 percent of families and 18.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 25.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
