history

Gallipolis was founded in 1790 by French settlers who had bought the passage and land in Ohio from the Scioto Company for 20 guineas per person. When the settlers arrived, it turned out that the Scioto Company had only had an option to buy instead of real estate, and only primitive huts had been built instead of a settlement. Shortly thereafter, the Scioto Company went bankrupt and the purchase option expired - the land was again wholly owned by the Ohio Company . After several years, the number of settlers in Gallipolis was greatly decimated by illness, emigration and violent death in the course of the Indian wars. In 1792–93 the settlement was enclosed by Indian tribes. In 1794 the Ohio Company bought 912  acres for $ 1,100 . In 1795, the US Congress awarded the settlers an additional 20,000 acres as compensation.

In Gallipolis was the Silver Bridge built in 1928 over the Ohio River, which connected the place with Point Pleasant in West Virginia . In 1967 the bridge collapsed, killing 46 people. In 1969, the Silver Memorial Bridge was built to replace the collapsed bridge .
