Garfield Heights is a city ( City ) in Cuyahoga County , Ohio , United States . According to the 2000 census, the population was 30,734. In 2003 it was given as 29,881. Garfield Heights is one of the suburbs of Cleveland and is 10 kilometers east of Parma, Ohio . The city belongs to the metropolitan area of Cleveland Lorain - Elyra ,

Cuyahoga Valley National Park , Ohio's first national park , is just 2 miles away . It can be reached directly from Garfield Heights via Rockside Road. The northwest of Garfield Heights is traversed by Mill Creek .

history

The present city was founded in 1904 as a separate parish under the name South Newburgh . In 1919, the name was changed to Garfield Heights in memory of Abram Garfield, one of the early settlers in the area and father of President James A. Garfield . The town was raised in 1930.

As early as 1786, the Moravian Brethren founded a settlement here. The area's first church, St. John Lutheran Church, dates back to 1852.

education

Garfield Heights has its own school board (Board of Education), the schools in Garfield Heights City School District are under. These are the William Foster Elementary School , the Elmwood Elementary School , the Cranwood Elementary School , the Maple Leaf Intermediate School , the Garfield Heights Middle School, and the Garfield Heights High School . The urban school system has around 350 employees.

There are also several denominational private schools . Catholic private schools are Trinity High School , formerly an all- girls school as Marymount High School , coeducational since 1973, St. Monica Catholic Elementary School , St. Therese School and SS Peter and Paul Elementary School . The St. John Lutheran School , School of the Lutheran church was closed after the 2005-2006 school year.

Health and education institutions are the largest employers in the city. These include the Marymount Hospital , which was built from 1946 to 1949 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis . The hospital has 1200 employees, including 200 doctors.
