history

Garrettsville formed as a separate community across borders on parts of the areas of the townships Hiram Township , Freedom Township and Nelson Township (Portage County, Ohio) . These townships had been surveyed as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve .

In 1803, Colonel John Garrett III bought 1.2 square kilometers of land in Nelson Township, which is now the largest part of Garrettsville. The cost of this was $ 1,313. 1803 was also the year Ohio became the 17th state in the United States. In July of the following year, the colonel moved into the country with his family and two friends. These settlers decided to use the water of Silver Creek to build a saw and a flour mill . In January 1806 these were completed. John Garrett could just see the completion, but died that same month.

1806 also the road from was Cleveland to Pittsburgh built, which led past the mill. This made it much easier to transport the grist and flour, so that the mill received many orders from the pioneers who were setting up their farms in this area at the time. Previously, these farmers had to grind their grain in smaller, family-owned mills, which often did not work properly due to lack of water or other reasons. All they had to do now was build paths up to the Cleveland-Pittsburgh road, and then they could easily reach the Garrettsville mill. The grain was ground in the Garrett's mill from a radius of over 30 kilometers.

In 1864, so many citizens had settled in the area around the mill that it was possible to set up an independent community. This officially happened on September 1, 1864, and Garrettsville became a village .

economy

At the beginning of the 20th century, Garrettsville was the world's largest producer of maple syrup . Mainly responsible for this success was Arthur Crane's factory on Windham Street, where the syrup was bottled and shipped. The location of the community in the middle of the triangle Akron - Cleveland - Youngstown , where around a third of the population of Ohio lives within a radius of only 60 kilometers , has also contributed to this . In addition, there is the characteristic landscape of this part of the former Connecticut Western Reserve , with its hills and plains lined with maple trees , which provide a good basis for agriculture.
