Portage County is a county in the US state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Ravenna .

The county is located in northeast Ohio and has an area of ​​1313 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Geauga County , Trumbull County , Mahoning County , Stark County , Summit County, and Cuyahoga Counties .

history

Portage County was formed on February 10, 1807 from parts of Trumbull County. It was named after a stretch between the Cuyahoga River and the Tuscarawas River , along which the boats or canoes had to be transported overland (English: " Portage ").

The county has a National Historic Landmark , May 4, 1970, Kent State Shootings Site , commemorating the Kent State Massacre . 48 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 18, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Portage County had 152,061 people in 56,449 households and 39,175 families. The population density was 119 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.40 percent white, 3.18 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.82 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.19 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 44,347 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,820. Males had a median income of $ 37,434 versus $ 26,232 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,428. 5.9 percent of families and 9.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
