Pike County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat has been Waverly since 1845 , before that it was Piketon .

The county is located in southern Ohio, approximately 60 km from each of the West Virginia and Kentucky borders , and covers an area of 1,150 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Ross County , Jackson County , Scioto County , Adams County, and Highland Counties .
history
Pike County was formed on January 3, 1815 from parts of Adams, Ross and Scioto Counties. It was named after Zebulon Pike , a US officer, explorer and explorer of the North American continent.
Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 18, 2018). The Waverly Canal Historic District is one of eight entries for the county in the NRHP.

According to the 2000 census , there were 27,695 people in 10,444 households and 7,665 families in Pike County. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.72 percent white, 0.89 percent African American, 0.74 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.07 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.36 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.56 percent of the population.
Of the 10,444 households, 35.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers, 26.6 percent were non-families, 22.8 percent were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.04.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,649 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,934. Males had a median income of $ 32,379 versus $ 20,761 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,093. 15.1 percent of families and 18.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 23.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
