Fayette County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Washington Court House .

The county southwest of the geographic center of Ohio and has an area of ​​1,054 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Madison County , Pickaway County , Ross County , Highland County , Clinton County, and Greene County .

history

Fayette County was formed on March 1, 1810 from parts of Highland County and Ross County. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a French general and politician who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the side of the colonists and played an important role in the French Revolution .

As of the 2000 census , Fayette County had 28,433 people in 11,054 households and 7,837 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.60 percent white, 2.07 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.46 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.55 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,735 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,692. Males had a median income of $ 31,870 versus $ 22,662 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,063. 7.7 percent of families and 10.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
