Preble County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Eaton .
geography
The county is located in southwest Ohio, borders Indiana to the west and has an area of 1,104 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Darke County , Montgomery County , Butler County , Union County, Indiana, and Wayne County, Indiana.
history
Preble County was formed on February 15, 1808 from parts of Butler County and Montgomery County. It was named after Edward Preble , a naval officer in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Preble County had 42,337 people in 16,001 households and 12,144 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.47 percent white, 0.32 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.43 percent of the population.
Of the 16,001 households, 34.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 63.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, 24.1 percent were non-families, 20.6 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,093 , and the median income for a family is $ 47,547. Males had a median income of $ 35,313 versus $ 23,573 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,444. 4.5 percent of families and 6.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 7.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
