history
Eaton was founded in 1806 by William Bruce . It was named after General William Eaton , who led US forces from Egypt to Tunis. In addition to the city and county in which it is located, local streets are named in honor of heroes of the Barbarian Wars. The village grew rapidly after it was founded. In 1846 the village had nearly 1,000 inhabitants. This growth was primarily due to Eaton's central location on two highways (turnpikes), which made it an important transport hub. Numerous people from Ohio traveled to Eaton to buy sulphurous water, which some believed to have healing properties. Eaton had grown into a settlement with three churches, six shops and a newspaper office. Some people from the village worked in limestone quarries nearby. In 1849 Eaton was hit by a cholera epidemic. About half of the community's residents fled, 120 of the 600 people who remained behind died.
