Erie County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Sandusky .

The county is located in northern Ohio, borders Lake Erie , the southernmost of the five Great Lakes , and has an area of 1,622 square kilometers, of which 660 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lorain Counties , Huron Counties , Sandusky Counties , and Ottawa Counties .
history
Erie County was formed on March 15, 1838 from parts of Huron County and Sandusky County. It was named after the North American Indian people of the Erie .
Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status : the Thomas Alva Edison Birthplace and the Spacecraft Propulsion Research Facility . 178 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 13, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 79,551 people in Erie County. 1,868 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 31,727 households and 21,764 families. The population density was 121 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.64 percent white, 8.64 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.53 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.60 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 31,727 households, 30.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, 31.4 percent were non-families, 27.0 percent were single households and 10.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.7 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,746 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,756. Males had a median income of $ 39,249 versus $ 23,697 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,530. 6.0 percent of families and 8.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line; these included 11.6 percent of children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.8 percent of people over 65 years of age.
