Van Wert County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Van Wert .

The county is located in northwest Ohio, borders Indiana to the west and has an area of ​​1,063 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Paulding County , Putnam County , Allen County , Auglaize County , Mercer County , Adams County, Indiana, and Allen County, Indiana.

history

Van Wert County was formed on February 12, 1820 from parts of Darke County and finally organized on March 18, 1837. It was named after Isaac Van Wart , a soldier and important figure in the American Revolutionary War . With two other soldiers he was involved in the arrest of the spy John André .

Six buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 19, 2018).

Van Wert County's Age Pyramid

According to the 2000 census , Van Wert County had 29,659 people in 11,587 households and 8,354 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.43 percent white, 0.75 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian and 0.75 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.77 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.56 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 11,587 households, 32.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, 27.9 percent were non-families, 24.7 percent were single households and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or older, there were statistically 92.4 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 39,497 , and the median  income for a family was $ 46,503. Males had a median income of $ 32,377 versus $ 23,859 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,293. 4.2 percent of families and 5.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 5.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 4.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
