Williams County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Bryan .

The county is located in the extreme northwest of Ohio, borders Michigan to the north and Indiana to the west and has an area of ​​1,096 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Hillsdale County, Michigan, Fulton County , Henry County , Defiance County , De Kalb County, Indiana, and Steuben County, Indiana.

history

Williams County was formed on February 12, 1820 from parts of Darke County. It was named after David Williams , an officer in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence . He was involved in the arrest of the spy John André .

Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 19, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Williams County had 39,188 people in 15,105 households and 10,664 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer.
