Clinton County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Wilmington .
geography
The county is located in central southwest Ohio, about 70 km from each of the borders with Kentucky and Indiana , and has an area of 1,068 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Greene County , Fayette County , Highland County , Brown County , Clermont County, and Warren County .
history
Clinton County was formed on February 19, 1810 from parts of Highland Counties and Warren Counties. It was named after George Clinton , a soldier, politician, Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States . According to The Descendants of William Sabin , one of the first people of European descent to be born in the county was Mary Stuart Sabin, daughter of Dr. Warren Sabin, c. 1812. Genetic studies revealed that Williston T. Mendenhall was also born in Clarksville, Clinton County on November 24, 1811.

As of the 2000 census , Clinton County had 40,543 people in 15,416 households and 11,068 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.99 percent white, 2.19 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.97 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.66 percent of the population.
Of the 15,416 households, 34.7 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 23.7 percent were single households and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.03.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 10.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,467 , and the median income for a family is $ 48,158. Males had a median income of $ 34,448 versus $ 23,846 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,462. 6.4 percent of families and 8.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 9.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
