history

The history of the place goes back to the beginning of the 19th century, when the first settlers in Clinton County built their log cabins. They came from Virginia and North Carolina and started working on small farms. Around 1820 the entire area was owned by the settlers. The place was originally called Buzzard's Glory and was renamed New Vienna by Harkenss T. Van Winkle around 1827, soon after it had become its own parish . The name Buzzard's Glory goes back to a tanner who hung his hides on poles in front of the house, which is said to have attracted a crowd of buzzards .
