Muskingum County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 86,074 people and a population density of 50 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Zanesville .

The county is located in east-east Ohio and has an area of 1742 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Coshocton County , Guernsey County , Noble County , Morgan County , Perry County, and Licking County .

history
Muskingum County was formed on January 7, 1804 from parts of Fairfield County and Washington County. It was named after the Muskingum River . Muskingum is a Delaware expression which means something like "swampy land" or "boggy land".

Muskingum County's population was 84,585 as of the 2000 census . 2,474 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 32,518 households and 22,860 families. The population density was 49 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.91 percent white, 4.01 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.37 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.52 percent of the population.
Of the 32,518 households, 33.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.0 percent were single mothers, 29.7 percent were non-families, 24.9 percent were single households, and 10.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.01.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 88.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,185 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,938. Males had a median income of $ 31,537 versus $ 22,151 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,533. 9.9 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 17.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
