history
The city became famous for October 10, 1774, when Colonel Andrew Lewis repulsed a Shawnee attack under Chief Cornstalk . The battle is known as the "Battle of Point Pleasant".
It also served as the home of Confederate Brigadier General John McCausland until he died on his farm on January 23, 1927.
Point Pleasant achieved a sensation and fame in 1966 and 1967, when around 100 sightings of the so-called Mothman were made in the city itself and the surrounding area . The situation came to a head when, on the evening of December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed during rush hour. Many residents blamed the Mothman for this. There is no evidence. This story provided the material for the book and film The Mothman Prophecies .
