Karrin Allyson (actually Karrin Allyson Schoonover ; born July 27, 1963 in Great Bend , Barton County , Kansas ) is an American jazz singer , pianist and songwriter .

life and career

Karrin Allyson grew up in Omaha and San Francisco and began her career as a singer, pianist and songwriter at an early age. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1987 with a degree in classical piano. She then moved to Minneapolis and began her career as a jazz singer there. In 1990 she went to Kansas City , where she recorded her first album under her own name in 1992 - I Didn't Know About You on Concord Records . In her subsequent productions, she worked with a stylistic repertoire ranging from Brazilian music, blues , bebop , scat and jazz ballad to pop standards, soft rock and folk rock titles. In 1998 she settled in New York City . Her album Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane was created there in 2000 , on which musicians such as James Carter , Steve Wilson , Bob Berg , James Williams , John Patitucci and Lewis Nash participated. In 2002 she recorded the ballad album In Blue with Wilson, Nash, Mulgrew Miller and Peter Washington , with interpretations of titles such as Long As You're Living , Angel Eyes , Blue Motel Room . The 2001 Coltrane album, Footprints (2006) and Imagina: Songs of Brasil (2008) were each nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category.
