Friedrich Wilhelm Schwartz

Friedrich Wilhelm Schwartz (born September 13, 1943 in Waldenburg , Silesia ) is a German health scientist and doctor . He is emeritus for epidemiology , social medicine and health system research at the Medical University of Hanover (MHH) , is considered the nestor of public health in Germany, was chairman of the advisory council for the assessment of developments in the health system , advisor to the European Union and the World Health Organization .

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm Schwartz studied art , philosophy , medicine and sociology in Munich , Marburg and Frankfurt .

Act

In 1973 Friedrich Wilhelm Schwartz received his doctorate in the history of medicine on the topic: The role of the state in medicine in the German territorial areas from the 16th to the 18th century at the Senckenberg Institute in Frankfurt, funded by the German National Academic Foundation. 1982 followed the habilitation in social medicine and epidemiology.

From 1972 to 1984 Schwartz was managing director of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians , from 1974 to 1984 director of the Central Institute for Statutory Health Insurance Care in the Federal Republic of Germany , from 1985 to 2003 with interruptions a member and from 1999 to 2002 chairman of the Advisory Council for the Assessment of Developments in the Health Care System .

Schwartz has advised various states: state governments in setting up health reporting or quality assurance in the health system, Lower Saxony in developing preventive programs , North Rhine-Westphalia in strategic issues of rehabilitation and quality assurance , the governments of the Philippines and Poland in restructuring their health systems. He advised the European Union as a member of the “Public Health Research Strategies” working group, and the World Health Organization appointed him as an expert on “Health of the Elderly”.

From 1985 to 2009 Schwartz was a university professor and director of the department for epidemiology, social medicine and health system research at the Hannover Medical School. He had turned down calls to other universities.

In 2006/2007 he was the initiator of the first German patient university . Schwartz was a member of the board of trustees of Stiftung Warentest .
