Steve Wilson

Steve Wilson (* 10. February 1961 in Hampton, Virginia ) is an American jazz - saxophonist (alto and soprano saxophone), clarinetist and flutist .

Live and act

Steve Wilson played in various rhythm and blues and funk bands as a teenager . He later studied at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond ; In 1987 he moved to New York, where he established himself in the jazz scene as an accompanist for numerous recordings, such as Billy Drummond , Louie Bellson's big band 1993, Mike LeDonne , Jonny King ( The Meltdown , 1997), Didier Lockwood , Michele Rosewoman , Terrell Stafford and Ralph Peterson . He also played in the formation Out of the Blue , the American Jazz Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band , the Joe Henderson Bigband ( Shade of Jade ) and the Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra. In 1988 he toured Europe with Lionel Hampton . In the same year he became a member of the Dave Holland Quintet and worked on its ECM album Point of View . In 1997 he was also involved in the recording of vibraphonist Stefon Harris ' album A Cloud of Red Dust . From 1998 to 2001 he played in Chick Corea's sextet, and in 1998 he appeared with him in New York's Blue Note . In 1997 he formed the Steve Wilson Quartet , which included pianist Bruce Barth , bassist Ed Howard and drummer Adam Cruz . The group played together for a decade and recorded two albums.

He also recorded a number of albums for the Criss Cross label with guest musicians such as Nicholas Payton , Ray Drummond , Mulgrew Miller , James Genus , Lewis Nash , Dennis Irwin . 1999 took part in the last recordings of the guitarist Charlie Byrd before his death, in 2000 on the album Communication Theory by the pianist David Berkman . In the same year he accompanied the singer Karrin Allyson on her album Ballads - Remembering John Coltrane . In 2011 he worked on Ryan Truesdells Centennial - Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans , and in 2018 on Miho Hazama's Grammy-nominated production Dancer in Nowhere .

Wilson has taught at the Manhattan School of Music , the State University of New York, and Columbia University . He was also artist-in-residence at the University of North Carolina , Hamilton College , Old Dominion University and the CITYFOLK arts program in Dayton, Ohio .

Awards

Wilson was honored with the 2001 Marc Crawford Jazz Educator Award from New York University ; In 2003 he received the Virginia Jazz Award for Musician of the Year from the Richmond Jazz Society.
