Miho Hazama
Miho Hazama ( Japanese 挾 間 美 帆 Hazama Miho , born November 13, 1986 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese modern jazz musician ( piano , arrangement composition , orchestral direction ) living in New York City . She has been the chief conductor of the DR Big Band since 2019 .
Live and act
Hazama, who is from Tokyo, began her professional career in 2007 as an orchestrator / arranger for jazz pianist Yosuke Yamashita . Since then she has worked with Vince Mendoza , Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Sagisu as well as for the Japanese television program Untitled Concert . At the age of 23, she completed her classical composition studies in Japan. During her studies there, she wrote symphonic compositions for the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra , the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and academic formations. At the age of 24, she moved to New York City to study jazz composition. In 2012 she graduated with honors from the Manhattan School of Music with Jim McNeely , Maria Schneider and Vince Mendoza.
In the same year Hazama recorded her debut album Journey to Journey with her M_Unit-Ensemble, a 13-piece chamber orchestra; In 2015 the album Time River followed with the same formation . In October 2017, the live album The Monk: Live at Bimhuis was created in Bimhuis , where Hazama directed the Metropole Orkest . Her third studio album Dancer in Nowhere was released in 2018. In the same year she conducted the WDR Big Band for several concerts with Theo Bleckmann .
In 2019 she was appointed the new chief conductor of the Danish DR Big Band, which she had previously directed on several occasions.
Prizes and awards
Hazama won an ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Award in 2011 and the Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize of the BMI Foundation in 2015 . Her debut album Journey to Journey was named Album of the Year by Jazz Japan magazine and received positive reviews from National Public Radio , Down Beat and JazzTimes . Her third album Dancer in Nowhere received a Grammy nomination in the category Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in late 2019 .
