Ralph Peterson
Ralph Peterson Jr. (born May 20, 1962 in Pleasantville , New Jersey ) is an American drummer , cornet player , trumpeter and bandleader of modern jazz .

Ralph Peterson's uncle and grandfather were drummers, and he himself began to be interested in percussion at the age of three. He grew up in Atlantic City , where he played the trumpet in the high school band and in local radio groups. After studying at Livingston College and Rutgers University , he began his professional career as a second drummer with Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers . He then worked in 1984 with Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison , in 1985 with Paul Brown , Walter Davis , Tom Harrell , the formation Out of the Blue , to which he belonged until 1988, also with Branford Marsalis 1986, David Murray (Hope Scope) , Craig Harris 1987, James Spaulding 1988, Roy Hargrove 1989, Jon Faddis 1989, Dewey Redman and Mark Helias 1989.
In the 1990s he was a sought-after session musician with musicians such as Jack Walrath , Craig Handy , Charles Lloyd , Kip Hanrahan , Bheki Mseleku , Courtney Pine , Steve Coleman , George Colligan , Stanley Cowell , Mark Shim and Betty Carter . From 1988 he began to work as a leader of his own formations, initially with the Quintet V or Volition , with Terence Blanchard, Steve Wilson , Geri Allen and Phil Bowler . With Allen and Bowler he also formed the Trio Triangular ; In 1989 he played in a quartet line-up as the Fo'tet , with Don Byron , Steve Wilson (later Bobby Franchesini ), Melissa Slocum (later Belden Bullock ) and Bryan Carrott . After living in Canada for a while , he returned to Philadelphia and continued to play with the Fo'Tet , making recordings with Triangular and with Uri Caine and bassist James Genus ( Blue Wail ) . He also leads the band Hip Pocket , in which he plays the trumpet. At the Down Beat Critics Poll 2020, the Gen-Next Big Band he led won as a rising star in the big band category.
Peterson has taught at Philadelphia's University of the Arts .
