Donald Harrison
Donald "Duck" Harrison (* 23. June 1960 in New Orleans ) is an American jazz - alto , soprano saxophonist and composer.
Life
Harrison studied in New Orleans high school under Ellis Marsalis (who taught him bebop and post-bop styles), but he also has drummers such as Roy Haynes (with whom he worked with 1979) and Art Blakey and Jack McDuff as his tutors as well the classic New Orleans jazz. His father Donald Harrison Sr. was a prominent figure in the local tradition of the " Mardi Gras - Indians", who maintain the African tradition of "call and response" chants (Harrison Jr. himself is the Big Chief of the " Congo Nation ”, in which he also designs his own costumes). In the 1980s he played (from 1981) in Art Blakeys Jazz Messengern, in the big band of Dino Betti van der Noot and in a band with Terence Blanchard until 1989, who also comes from New Orleans. In the 1990s he played with the newly formed The Headhunters , Herbie Hancock's tour band .
Harrison can play almost any style of jazz. He sees himself as the founder and protagonist of a “Nouveau Swing Style” that mixes swing rhythms with rhythm and blues , hip-hop , Mardi Gras Indian music and reggae . There are also excursions in rap and funk .
He is the uncle of the trumpeter Christian Scott .
